Research question

How does the experience of corporate depression impact individuals in various workplaces, and what can be done to support their mental health and well-being?

Secondary Research

  • Corporate jobs can increase the risk of mental health issues, including depression and anxiety. (The Guardian, 2020)

  • High-stress corporate environments are linked to cardiovascular issues. (The New York Times, 2019)

  • Job insecurity in the corporate world can lead to chronic stress and increase the risk of depression. (Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, 2021)

  • Many workers in high-pressure corporate jobs may feel unable to seek help for their mental health concerns. (N/A)

  • Strategies to address corporate depression include creating a supportive workplace culture, providing mental health resources and counseling, and promoting work-life balance. (N/A)

  • Many companies are now implementing policies and programs to address mental health in the workplace. (Deloitte, 2022)

“Through my work experience, I have observed how work pressure can lead to depression among individuals and negatively impact their mental health and personal lives. Unfortunately, I have also witnessed the tragic consequences of work-related depression, as individuals, I knew passed away due to this condition. These experiences have inspired me to explore further the issue of work-related depression and how it can be prevented in various types of workplaces.”

I have used my previous observational research on work-related depression as a foundation for this project. This has allowed me to build upon my experience and knowledge in this area and refine my research question to understand better how work-related depression affects individuals in different workplaces. I hope that this project will make a valuable contribution to the existing research on work-related depression and help to improve mental health and well-being in the workplace.

Ripples and Formation

Ripples and Formation are 3D objects designed to measure heart and mind health by collecting individual well-being data through wearable sensors. This device produces accurate reports for users to take necessary actions towards a healthier lifestyle. For my first Master's project, Ripples, I created a digital product that reflects the concept of "Data Mirrors" through data structures. The aim is to design a user-friendly digital space that enables users to see, interact with, and understand their data, providing valuable insights. The end product should simplify data exploration, allowing users to gain value from their data through a seamless user experience.

A new sense

A new sense is inspired by acupressure jewellery. It’s a ring that can monitor mental health through biomedical signals and transfer that mental health information into an app, which can suggest and give guidance to take required actions and mindfulness science practice advice to make part of a daily routine.

Ripples

Ripples depict the state of mind and body, as humans mould themselves like water flow according to their surroundings. Here, Ripple’s harmonious state would help users understand their state of heart and mind health.

Setbacks and new direction

This project was the first data visualization design I worked on. The major challenge was creating a layout that could relate to emotions and, at the same time, primarily health-centric. It was a struggle initially to come up with such data visualization, which has to be comprehensible and meaningful. Multiple changes have been made to capture the user health data fluctuation while using the ring with the help of various dimensions. However, every round of changes helped to understand how to reflect the user’s health in such a way that can help the user.

Ripples Dimensions

Ripples formation

When ripples start spreading and coming closer, that signifies when a person's health is harmonious. Heart and mental health.

Light to dark colour Ripples shows the health condition from low to high. The lighter the ripple’s poor condition, the darker or brighter the ripples show good health condition.

Application Walkthrough

This feature enables users to track their HRV and heart rate, gaining valuable insights into their heart and mind health. Users can take proactive steps towards improving their well-being by providing real-time data and actionable insights.

The Sense feature provides users with an understanding of how the ring works to calculate their health data through biometric signals. By converting this data into ripples, the feature helps users take actionable steps towards improving their health.

The Ripples Dimensions feature guides users to understand their health data accurately, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health.

This feature encourages users to take immediate action by providing real-time recommendations for stress relief and physical activity. Additionally, it generates an everyday health score to help users track their progress towards their health goals.

CONCLUSION + LEARNINGS

In my exploration of data visualization, I found technology's potential in capturing and conveying human data intriguing. This project deepened my appreciation for technology's role in revealing insights about behaviour and health that were once elusive. Data visualization's capacity to simplify complexity and unveil hidden patterns fascinated me. This experience underscored the potential to impact lives and well-being through these insights positively.
